Artek – art and technology since 1935

In 1935 a group of idealists, who shared the passion for better living, founded Artek. The business idea was “to sell furniture and promote progressive living and culture” and the name was a synthesis of art and technology, one rational, the other emotional.

Alvar Aalto was a highly talented architect and an eager spokesman for the international modernist movement within he used to create his own unique style. Aalto was innovative and radical and became known for his experimental approach for bending wood. His style became known as human modernism. Alvar Aalto´s dialoque with nature, architecture, interior and the human being is a living legacy.

Artek combines emotional (ART) and rational (TECHNOLOGY) thinking in time, where it it relevant to understand the synthesis of science and art and embrace the social and environmental awareness.

Artek is facing a new era with creative leadership by Tom Dixon. Combining the ideology of the radical founders and a contemporary approach with product development the company is very art and tech. Honouring Alvar Aaltos’s thoughts the classic collection bases largely on Aalto’s original furniture and lightning designs.

The attention is paid to uncompromised commitment in development processes and in encouraging research projects for experimental and environmentally friendly resource. Natural materials and the human approach are as relevant as they were in the time of modernism. Sustainability, functionality and longevity are the key attributes in our modern world, where the concern of climate, energy and sense of security are close to our everyday life.

”Nature is clearly the most successful of all artists. Form must also have a content and that content must be linked with nature”. –Alvar Aalto
